Russia says it prevented Ukrainian drone attack on the Kremlin

Russia said on Wednesday (3) that it had shot down two Ukrainian drones targeting the Kremlin and reported an assassination attempt on President Vladimir Putin, just days before the major military parade on May 9.

“During the night, the Kiev regime attempted to attack the Kremlin (…) with two drones directed against the Kremlin that were deactivated thanks to the use of electronic warfare radar systems,” the Russian presidency said in a statement.

“We consider these actions to be an attempted terrorist act and an attempt on the life of the president”, added the Kremlin, which also reported that the Russian head of state was not injured.

A video published by some Russian media outlets on social media shows a column of smoke over the Kremlin at night. It was not possible to confirm the authenticity of the images with independent sources.

According to the Russian presidency, “there are no victims or damage caused by the fall and dispersion of fragments” of drones over the Kremlin.

Some drones have crashed in the Moscow region in recent months, but this is the first time an attack attributed to Kiev has taken place in the heart of the Russian capital, which is almost 500 km from the border with Ukraine.

The attempted attack denounced by the Kremlin takes place just a few days before the “Victory Day” celebrations, May 9, when Russia celebrates the defeat of Nazi Germany in 1945.

The Kremlin announced that the May 9 parade in Moscow will go ahead as scheduled despite the attack.

“The parade will happen. There are no changes to the program,” said Russian presidential spokesman Dmitri Peskov.

Moscow City Hall announced a ban on drone flights in the Russian capital.
