Sou da Paz launches campaign “The hand that signs is the same one that pulls the trigger”

The Sou da Paz Institute - a non-governmental organization that has been fighting for the implementation of public security and violence prevention policies for 20 years - released this Tuesday (6) a new campaign against making disarmament more flexible. Changes in legislation are among the causes of the increase in the number of weapons and ammunition in the hands of civilians in recent years.

Named “Trigger Pen“, the action reports that since January 2019, more than 40 new regulations have facilitated the purchase and circulation of firearms in Brazil.

A consequence? Ordinary citizens now have access to weapons previously restricted to the police, permission to purchase a much larger number of weapons and ammunition, and the ability to carry weapons in public places.

According to the Institute, every day, there are more than 1.300 new weapons purchased by civilians. Many of them have already been diverted and ended up in the hands of crime, due to reduced supervision – also a consequence of the new decrees.

The new regulations did not pass through the National Congress, nor were they subjected to the scrutiny of society – they literally passed “in the pen".

The campaign has already started to be shared on famous social networks.
