TSE restricts carrying of weapons on election day

The Superior Electoral Court (TSE) banned the carrying of weapons in polling places on October 2, the date of the first round of the presidential elections. The restriction applies to a radius of 100 meters from polling stations, from 48 hours before the vote, and up to 24 hours after it. The decision was announced this Tuesday (30).

The restriction – decided unanimously in the TSE plenary and provided for in the electoral law – will also apply to October 30, the date of the second round, and does not include security forces working on those days.

Minister Ricardo Lewandowski, rapporteur of the process, highlighted the need for the measure citing “a situation of marked confrontation” and a significant increase in gun registrations for hunters, sports shooters and collectors, categories favored by presidential decrees.

Lewandoski mentioned that both Lula (PT) and Jair Bolsonaro (PL) have suffered threats in recent weeks. Both appeared at rallies wearing bulletproof vests.

“The idea behind the ban is to protect the exercise of voting from any threat,” said the minister, who cited as an example the risk of an episode similar to the invasion of the Capitol on January 6, 2021 in the United States.
