The ceremony began with a tribute to one of the highest-grossing films of the year, “Top Gun: Maverick”. Two fighter jets flew over Los Angeles as the city's biggest stars found their seats at the Dolby Theater.

The host of the awards show, comedian Jimmy Kimmel, wasted no time dedicating much of his opening monologue to joking about Will Smith's assault on Chris Rock on stage following a joke about the actor's wife's hair.

After 'the slap', Smith returned to the stage to receive the statuette for best actor.
