Presidential candidates' Twitter: political violence on the agenda, remnants of 7/9 and more

Two facts marked the political and pre-election scenario in Brazil this Friday (9): the murder of a Lula supporter, in Mato Grosso, by a Bolsonaro supporter, and the speeches by Lula and Bolsonaro about the demonstrations on Independence Day.

Luis Inácio Lula da Silva (PT)

Lula shared, just this morning, a video in which his candidate for vice-president, Geraldo Alckmin (PSB), warns that his old lines “are being used by Bolsonaro”. Alckmin also calls on Bolsonaro to explain “the purchase of 51 properties with cash”.

Later, after the press having reported that a 24-year-old young man had murdered his co-worker due to political intolerance, Lula returned to the networks to express his condolences to the family and said that “Brazil does not deserve the hatred that has spread in that country”.

At the end of the afternoon, he said he was in Rio de Janeiro to “make a commitment to Marcelo Freixo”, who is a candidate for governor. The state of Rio “must always be treated as a good reference for Brazil”, he argued.

Lula also condemned, once again, the rule that imposes secrecy 100 years with the pen of the current President of the Republic. And criticized Bolsonaro: “He’s a little worse than Trump, he’s ruder, less civilized. Bolsonaro is a bad copy of Trump”, said the former president.

The pair met with a group of evangelicals in São Gonçalo, as Lula discloses in another tweet. He makes other nods to the topic:

Jair Bolsonaro (PL)

The candidate trying to be re-elected announced an initiative that promeboost the areas of innovation and entrepreneurship in Brazil.

An hour later, he again called Lula, his rival at the polls, an “ex-convict”, stating that the PT member would have felt “excluded” from the gathering of his supporters on September 7th, and that is why he called the Bolsonaro crowd “ couscous clan” (changing the term Ku Kux Kla). Lawyers allied with Bolsonaro said they will sue Lula for the statement. ((CNN)

In two other publications, Bolsonaro once again praised the support received from Brazilians and repudiated the comparison made by Lula.

Until 19:33 pm this Friday (9), Bolsonaro had not publicly taken a position regarding the new episode of political violence which occurred in Mato Grosso, with the death of a Lula supporter.

Soraya Thronick (União Brasil)

Regarding the case of murder due to political intolerance, the candidate accused those responsible of “corruption” and “polarization, “while the Brazilian people are the ones who suffer”.

“There are people dying in Brazil because of political and partisan adversity”, he defined.

She also published a sequence of other short sentences this Friday:

Simone Tebet (MDB)

Tebet asked Brazilians for peace, less fights and arguments.

She also criticized the current president, stating that the facts prove that “Bolsonaro does not respect women or science.” The candidate attacked the reduction of public funding resources for research and development.

Ciro Gomes (PDT)

The pedestrianist is betting on less text and more audiovisual on Twitter. But, in order not to lose his custom, Ciro opened this Friday (9) with a thread criticizing his competitors, Lula and Bolsonaro:

Afterwards, he amended a message of opposition to Bolsonaro and the September 7th demonstrations. He went up then a video with senator Randolfe Rodrigues accusing the Workers' Party of being corrupt and responsible for having germinated Bolsonarism.

Ciro also commented, in the afternoon, on the death of Lula's supporter by a Bolsonarist in MT. “Down with political violence,” he wrote.
