Latest from Ukraine: Kiev claims to have identified alleged Ukrainian soldier executed on video

Ukraine said this Tuesday (7) that it had identified the alleged soldier whose execution was filmed and widely shared on social media. The images sparked outrage and the Ukrainian government calls for investigations into war crimes.

In the footage, a supposed Ukrainian soldier appears standing in a trench, smoking a cigarette, and is executed after saying “Glory to Ukraine”.

Ukrainian authorities accused Russian forces of carrying out the crime (execution of a prisoner of war).

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky considered that the video showed the “brutal death” of a Ukrainian soldier by Russian forces. “Let’s find the killers”, he said.

O Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba asked the International Criminal Court (ICC) to open an investigation.

“According to preliminary data, the executed person is a soldier of the 30th mechanized brigade, Tymofiy Mykolayovych Shadura”, the Ukrainian army reported this Tuesday (7) on Telegram.

The armed forces reported that the Ukrainian soldier disappeared on February 3, while participating in fighting near Bakhmut, in eastern Ukraine.

“Final confirmation of identity will be established once the body is returned,” the source added in the statement.

According to Ukrainian authorities, the soldier's body is in an area currently controlled by Russian troops.

It was not possible to independently verify the location or date of recording of the video, or whether it showed a Ukrainian prisoner of war, as Ukrainian authorities claim.
