Former Amazon executive sues company alleging discrimination and retaliation

A former scientist from artificial intelligence (IA) processed the Amazon, accusing the retail and technology giant of gender discrimination, retaliation and unfair dismissal. The scientist, Dr. Viviane Ghaderi, claims she was demoted and later fired after complaining about copyright violations committed by the company during AI development.

According to the court filing, Ghaderi worked on Amazon's advanced language (Alexa) and broad language models (LLM) teams. Upon her return from maternity leave in January 2023, part of her role was to identify breaches of copyright and report them to the internal legal department.

The lawsuit alleges that his staff director pressured Ghaderi to ignore Amazon's copyright policies in order to improve Alexa search results, stating that “everyone does it” referring to competing AI companies.

Ghaderi also alleges a series of mistreatment related to her pregnancy. She claims that, when she informed Marcu, her previous manager, about the pregnancy, he transferred her temporarily.ariaLies to another supervisor, claiming he wouldn't have to “worry” about managing his team while on leave.

Upon his return to work, Ghaderi faced an alleged hostile environment. Her new manager allegedly made discriminatory comments and pressured her to delay her maternity leave.

After complaining to HR about the negative performance evaluation and lack of career advancement prometaken, Ghaderi was demoted.

After a new protected medical license, Ghaderi received another negative evaluation and discovered that her career prometaken before maternity leave was no longer available.

The court case highlights the pressure faced by AI developers regarding copyright infringements on training data. Cases involving the use of copyrighted text by AI models have become frequent.

This case raises serious questions about gender discrimination and ethics in the development of artificial intelligence at Amazon.
