Fire at migration center leaves at least 38 dead in Mexico

At least 39 migrants died in a fire in the early hours of Tuesday (28) in the building of the National Migration Institute in Ciudad Juárez, northern Mexico. The city is on the border with the United States (USA).

The place functioned as a temporary shelter for immigrants who were collected on the city's streets, who constantly try to cross the Mexican border towards the USA. It is not yet known how the fire started and the nationalities of the victims.

The scenes are shocking: reporters from international TV stations show rows of bodies wrapped up on the floor.

“The National Migration Institute (INM) of the Government secretariat regrets the death – to date – of 39 foreign migrants in a fire,” said a statement released earlier by the center.
