Russia says it welcomes attempts to promote peace in Ukraine

Russia stated this Thursday (27) that it welcomes any initiative that brings Ukraine closer to the "end of the conflict", a day after a telephone conversation between the presidents of Ukraine and China, a country that wishes to act as mediator.

“We are prepared to welcome anything that could bring the end of the conflict in Ukraine closer and achieve the goals that Russia has set,” said the Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov.

The Ukrainian president said on Wednesday that he had a “long and meaningful” conversation with Xi Jinping, an ally of Moscow, with whom he had wanted to have a dialogue for several months.

At the end of February, China presented the country's peace plan for Ukraine, but the initiative remains very vague and theoretical, as it insists on contradictory principles, such as respect for the territorial integrity of States, and therefore of Ukraine, and defense Russia's diplomatic and security interests.

Officially, China claims to be neutral in the conflict, but Xi Jinping never condemned the Russian offensive against Ukraine, which began in February 2022, and expressed support for Russian President Vladimir Putin.
