Steve Bannon, Trump strategist, is accused of fraud and turns himself in in New York

Former President Donald Trump's strategist, Steve Bannon, handed himself in to the police in New York this Thursday (8). He is accused of fraud, conspiracy and money laundering and could be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison.

Steve Bannon was the main strategist of former United States (US) President Donald Trump's successful campaign in the 2016 White House election. But he is being investigated on six criminal charges related to the construction of the border wall between the US and the Mexico.

Bannon decided to hand himself in to the police this Thursday (8), in New York, and face the charges. According to the indictment, there are two counts of money laundering, three counts of conspiracy and one count of conspiracy to commit fraud.

Welcomed by dozens of cameras outside the court, Bannon, who later appeared handcuffed in a courtroom, said he was “persecuted” by the New York justice system.

Resumption of the case

The Manhattan public prosecutor's indictment brings to light an older action, with the same theme and which had already been archived. Bannon now faces state-level charges.

In August 2020, Bannon and three other men had been charged with defrauding private donations made to “We Build the Wall”. But, according to information from the Reuters news agency, Trump's former advisor pleaded not guilty and the federal charge was dropped.
