Texas passes bill banning transgender treatments for minors

The Texas State Legislature approved on Wednesday a bill that prohibits gender transition for minors, with hormonal or surgical treatments, at the same time that the governor of Florida enacted a similar text in his state.

The law will prohibit doctors from prescribing this type of treatment, but an exception is made for minors who are already undergoing treatment – who must however “abandon” it progressively, according to the document.

To become law, the text must be signed by the Republican governor, Greg Abbott, which appears to be just a formality given the politician's position on the issue.

Last year, Abbott ordered an investigation into parents of minors receiving this type of treatment, which he likened to child abuse, which has forced some families to flee the state.

If the law is enacted, Texas will be the second most populous American state in the United States and the largest by territory to adopt such a policy, but not the only one.

Ron DeSantis, governor of Florida – the third largest state in the country in terms of population – signed on Wednesday a law voted in early May that prohibits hormonal and surgical gender transition treatments for minors.

DeSantis, a likely Republican presidential hopeful in 2024, compared the procedures to “mutilations.”

“It’s an attack on freedom”, criticized Joe Saunders, from the association Equality Florida, which defends the rights of the LGBT+ community.

More than 10 states have already adopted restrictions of this type.

Other laws address the discussion of gender identity in educational centers, the use of neutral pronouns by minors and even drag queen shows, which conservatives consider too sexualized.
