Latest from Ukraine: Germany will send Leopard 2 tanks to fight Russians

The German press reported this Tuesday (24) that the European country will send Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine and allow other countries to do the same, responding to insistent requests for support to contain the advance of the Russian Army on Ukrainian soil. The United States (USA) could send its Abrams tanks to the former Soviet republic, according to the American "Wall Street Journal".

Before Germany announced the decision, the Prime Minister of Poland had already provoked the German nation, asking for “bravery” from the country's authorities to allow the export of tanks to Ukraine.

The head of the German government, Olaf Scholz, must give the order to send the Leopard 2A6 this Wednesday (25), reported the German magazine “Der Spiegel”. The magazine added that at least a dozen of these combat vehicles would be sent.

Citing sources linked to the government, the German channel NTV indicated that Scholz is one step away from giving in to pressure and announcing that his country will hand over the tanks to Ukraine. He must also approve other countries to deliver Leopards 2 to Kiev.

When contacted by AFP, a spokesperson for the German Chancellor declined to comment on this information.

Joint action with the USA?

According to information recently released by the press, Scholz conditioned the sending of heavy tanks to Ukraine on a similar decision by the United States (USA).

Experts believe that sending these tanks could have a “significant impact” on the war against Russia.

Hours earlier, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius promemade a quick decision and encouraged allied countries to begin training Ukrainian forces to use this type of weaponry.
