Did you know that Disney has a special district?

The state of Florida is preparing to regain control of an area where Disney operates as a local government, according to a bill presented on Monday (6) in the state Parliament, the latest episode in a dispute between Governor Ron DeSantis and the entertainment giant.

The Republican politician and the company fell out last year when the Disney criticized a law promoted by DeSantis that prohibits addressing issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity in primary schools in Florida.

In retaliation for this criticism, the governor signed a law in April to eliminate the special district of Disney, which includes its theme park Orlando: Walt Disney World, before June 2023.

The company, which employs more than 75 thousand people in Florida, manages this 100 km² district as a local town hall since the 1960s. It collects taxes and guarantees essential public services such as garbage collection and water treatment.

The text presented this Monday aims to end this agreement. If approved, which is very likely given the Republican majority in the House, the district’s current board of supervisors will be replaced by “five members appointed by the governor and confirmed by the Senate.”

The initiative against Disney is part of the cultural battle waged in recent months by DeSantis, 44, seen as a likely candidate for the 2024 White House.

For months, Republicans, led by the governor of Florida, have attacked Democratic media outlets, companies and politicians who they accuse of wanting to impose their progressive ideology on others.
