Madeleine disappeared from the apartment where she was vacationing with her family in the Algarve region, in Portugal, on the night of May 3, 2007. At the time, she was three years old. Her parents had left Madeleine and her two brothers in bed and went out to dinner with friends at a bar opposite the hotel where they were staying. At around 22pm, Kate found Madeleine's bed empty and the window open.

Due to the repercussions and appeals from the family, the case was reopened five years later.
