To avoid flu and Covid-19 during Carnival: at any sign of symptoms, stay home!

Experts from the InfoGripe Fiocruz Bulletin issue a warning: in events with large crowds, the transmission of respiratory viruses in general is facilitated, therefore, when faced with flu symptoms, avoid "blocks" and stay at home! The good news is that the current scenario is different from the carnivals of recent years, with Covid rates at low levels. But, to not rise uncontrollably again, everyone has to do their part!

“The main recommendation during Carnival is in relation to those who have respiratory symptoms close to the parties, blocks and parades. If the person is carrying the Covid-19 or Influenza virus, which also continues to decline, be advised to avoid attending large events because it could facilitate the process of an increase in cases in your locality”, points out the coordinator of InfoGripe (Fiocruz ), researcher Marcelo Gomes.

The new InfoGripe Bulletin, released this Thursday (16/2)
, shows that it is possible to observe an increase in positive cases for the influenza A and Sars-CoV-2 (Covid-19) viruses in the state of Amazonas in recent weeks. This is not reflected in the rest of the country.

However, despite the relatively low volume, this trend may be an indication of the beginning of a season of case growth.

“Last week, we had already highlighted the slight increase in positive cases associated with Influenza A in Amazonas, and, in this update, the signal is now clearer. As it impacts the trend of increasing new weekly cases in recent weeks among adults, this data requires a little more attention, particularly in the state of Amazonas”, adds the expert.

Marcelo Gomes draws attention to the importance of vaccination against Covid-19 (with the bivalent vaccine), which begins on February 27th. At this time, immunization is focused on the population most at risk of developing serious cases of Covid-19, such as elderly people over 60 years of age and people with disabilities.

Numbers for Brazil

In the last four epidemiological weeks, the prevalence among cases with a positive result for respiratory viruses was 57% for Sars-CoV-2 (Covid-19), 1,8% for influenza A; 1,6% for influenza B; 26,5% for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
