Even with the continued weakening of the El Niño phenomenon, abnormally warm conditions persist, with each month since June of the previous year being the hottest on record.

The average temperature in April 2024 reached 1,58 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial average of 1850-1900. Furthermore, the last 12 months have seen an average temperature 1,6°C above pre-industrial levels, exceeding the target set by the 2015 Paris Agreement to limit global warming.

Copernicus director, Carlo Buontempo, highlighted to the AFP the influence of increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases. The additional energy trapped in the oceans and atmosphere will continue to drive global temperatures to new record highs. Ocean warming also poses a threat to marine life, potentially causingpromehave the ability to absorb greenhouse gas emissions.

Climate forecasts indicate the possibility of a transition to La Niña in the second half of the year, which could result in a decrease in global temperatures, although conditions remain uncertain.

Urgent challenges

The urgent need for action to mitigate the impacts of climate change is highlighted given the persistent trend of increasing global temperatures and extreme weather events.

With this scenario in mind, the world faces increasingly urgent challenges in dealing with climate issues and seeking sustainable solutions to protect the planet and its communities.

“It’s still a little early” to predict whether new records will continue to be broken, Nicolas said, given that 2023 has been exceptional.

This record of record temperatures in April highlights the importance of deepening efforts in the search for effective measures to combat climate change.
