Deforestation in the Amazon grows in 2022 and reaches the worst mark in Inpe’s historical series

The deforestation of the Amazon continues to break new negative records. Data from the Space Research Institute (Inpe) show that the accumulated number of deforestation alerts in the Legal Amazon was 10.267 km², from January until December 30, 2022, which is equivalent to the devastation of 3 thousand football fields per day . This is the worst mark in the annual historical series of Deter, the institute's Real-Time Deforestation Detection system.

The information disclosed by Inpe this Friday (6) also point out that the accumulated number of deforestation in December 2022 at Amazon was 218,41 km². The number is equivalent to the size of the city of Recife (PE) in area.

Thus, this is the 3rd worst December in the historical series of the Hold, behind only 2017 and 2015, when deforestation areas reached 288 and 266 km², respectively.

Furthermore, the index represents an increase of 150% compared to the same month of the previous year.
