Deforestation alerts in the Amazon fall 66% in August

The accumulated deforestation alerts during August 2023 in the Legal Amazon reached 563 km², the third lowest mark so far for the period in the Deter historical series, which began in 2015. The numbers are from the Institute for Space Research (Inpe) and were released this Tuesday afternoon (05) by the Ministry of the Environment.

“In the month of August we had a 66,11% reduction in deforestation” in relation to August 2022, announced the Minister of the Environment, Marina Silva, during an official ceremony in Brasília on the occasion of Amazon Day.

With 563 km² (an area approximately the size of the city of São Luís), this year's rate was only above the marks of 2017 and 2018, when the index reached 278 km² and 526 km², respectively.
