7 thousand football fields!!! This is the area that garbage occupies in rivers and seas every year in Brazil, according to Abrelpe: there are 3 million tons of solid waste. “The best solution to the problem of garbage at sea lies precisely in the improvement of urban cleaning systems and infrastructures in cities, which must occur with permanent environmental education programs implemented in all layers of the population”, says the president of International Solid Waste Association, Carlos Silva Filho, who also leads Abrelpe.

According to the association, around 80% of the total waste found in the seas comes from human activities carried out on the continent, whether on the coast or in regions where rivers flow into marine environments.

And the most recent data shows that around 22 million tons of plastics leak into the environment each year around the world, and a considerable portion of these materials end up in the oceans.😢
