India approves financing of R$12 billion to develop green hydrogen

The Indian government has approved around R$12,4 billion to support the production, use and export of green hydrogen, with the aim of helping the country reduce its emissions and become a major exporter. The funding, announced Wednesday, is a first step toward establishing the capacity to produce at least 4 million metric tons of green hydrogen by the end of this decade, officials said.

O green hydrogen is hydrogen generated through the electrolysis of water, powered by electricity generated from renewable energy sources. Most of the world's hydrogen is produced using fossil fuels, especially natural gas.

The goal of the funding initiative is “to make green hydrogen affordable and reduce its cost over the next five years. It will also help India reduce its emissions and become a major exporter in the field,” said Anurag Thakur, India's Minister for Information and Broadcasting.
