Level of greenhouse gas emissions in Brazil falls by 8% in 2022, according to report

Brazil recorded an 8% drop in greenhouse gas emissions in 2022, revealed data from the report "Greenhouse Gas Emission Estimation System of the Climate Observatory" (SEEG), released this Thursday (23).

Despite the reduction, the numbers are the third highest mark observed since 2005 – behind only the years 2019 and 2021.

The two main factors that contributed to this result were the reduction in the deforestation rate da Amazon last year and the large volume of rain, which generated a record decrease in the activation of fossil thermoelectric plants.

According to the report, the increase in emissions over the last four years poses challenges for Brazil to meet the reduction target established in the Paris Agreement. For it to be fulfilled, it is necessary to reduce emission rates from deforestation in the Amazon by 49% by 2025. This objective is equivalent to the lowest average of devastation ever recorded in the country, between 2009 and 2012.

Relevant points of the report SEEG:

  • Between 2019 and 2022, Brazil emitted 9,4 billion gross tons of greenhouse gases, returning to levels observed between the 1990s and early 2000s;
  • Brazil is the sixth largest climate polluter, responsible for 3% of global emissions. The country is behind China, USA, India, Russia and Indonesia;
  • The devastation of all Brazilian biomes corresponded to 1,12 billion tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted, that is, 48% of the total recorded;
  • In agriculture, there was a record increase in emissions, with an increase of 3%, the highest since 2003.
