Global warming should reach world food supply before 1,5°C, says UN expert

The world is likely to face major disruptions to food supplies well before temperatures rise to the 1,5°C target, a UN expert has warned, as the impacts of the climate crisis combine with water shortages and agricultural practices inadequate to threaten global agriculture.

Alain-Richard Donwahi, former Minister of Defense of Côte d'Ivoire – who led the summit COP15 of the UN on desertification last year – said that the effects of the drought are occurring more quickly than expected.

“Climate change is a pandemic that we need to combat quickly. Look at how fast climate degradation is going – I think it's going even faster than we predicted,” he said. “Everyone is set at 1,5C [above pre-industrial levels], and it’s a very important target. But in fact, some very bad things could happen, in terms of soil degradation, water scarcity and desertification, long before 1,5°C.”

The problems of rising temperatures, heat waves, droughts and more intense floods put the food safety in many regions, Donwahi said. As well as bad agricultural practices.

The expert urged private sector investors to get involved and take advantage of opportunities to make a profit. “The private sector is interested in agriculture and better use of the soil. We are talking about [improving] income. We are talking about agroforestry, which is another way for the private sector to make investment profitable,” he said. “We have to be innovative, to find new vehicles for financing.”
