BNDES blocks 58 rural landowners who deforested in the country

The BNDES (National Bank for Economic and Social Development) reported this Friday (17) that it blocked R$25 million in financing resources from 58 rural landowners involved in irregular deforestation. The institution's president, Aloizio Mercadante, stated that financing blocks will be the bank's line from now on. “BNDES will be ruthless.”

To verify who the illegal deforesters are, the bank has been using deforestation monitoring data from MapBiomas since February this year. The tool equipped with georeferencing maps accurately indicates land cover and use in each of the country's biomes. The technology makes it possible to detect tree felling on a daily basis.

BNDES cross-references data from MapBiomas information with records from the Rural Environmental Registry (CAR) to locate rural properties.

Before determining the blockade, BNDES also checks whether there is authorization from the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) for legal deforestation of the identified area. If not, the financing will be blocked immediately.

The president of BNDES, Aloizio Mercadante said that the technology is “much more efficient” than sending an inspector to the area, walking around the property, identifying problems. “Satellite imaging is a revolutionary leap, it is a disruptive technology,” he said.

“We no longer accept criminal entrepreneurs who deforest and have financing from public and private banks, because we are working with several partners,” said Mercadante.
