Searches for “deforestation” increase 294.000% after Bolsonaro suggests research on Google

The candidates running for president of the Republic, Lula (PT) and Bolsonaro (PL), will meet last Sunday (16) for the first TV debate for the 2nd round. On that occasion, re-election candidate and current president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) suggested that the public “give a google" to research under which government deforestation in the Amazon was greater. From then on, monitoring carried out by the startup Tunad recorded that the environment theme gained the highlight of the night, due to the significant increase in searches on the Google by the word “deforestation”. The president's speech made interest in the word jump from 85 searches/hour to approximately 250 thousand searches/hour. The peak, which occurred at 21pm on Sunday (16), reached a growth of 294.000%.

“The interest generated was so much that I believe it is the greatest we have ever monitored throughout our history”, analyzes Cesar Sponchiado, CEO of Tunad.

These numbers are obtained by crossing data from the Google Trends with platform data Tunad, which uses its own algorithm to transform interest rates into number of searches. In other words, the company monitors the reaction of Internet users based on the content published, both in online and offline media.
