Climate crisis is related to the increase in domestic violence, says study

As deadly heatwaves sweep across cities in India, China, the United States and Europe amid the climate crisis, new research finds that rising temperatures are associated with a substantial increase in domestic violence against women.

A study published in JAMA Psychiatry this Wednesday (28) found that an increase of 1°C in the average annual temperature is related to an increase of more than 6,3% in incidents of domestic violence in three countries in South Asia.

The research tracked 194.871 girls and women aged 15 to 49 from India, Pakistan and Nepal between 2010 and 2018, and their reported experiences of emotional, physical and sexual violence. He compared this data with temperature fluctuations over the same period.

India, which of the three countries already had the highest rates of violence, also had the largest increase: with a 1°C increase in heat, there was an 8% increase in physical violence and a 7,3% increase in violence. sexual.

Michelle Bell, a professor of environmental health at Yale University and co-author of the study, said there were “many potential pathways, both physiological and sociological, by which higher temperature could affect the risk of violence.”

Extreme heat can lead to crop failure, withpromeinfrastructure, eroding economies, locking people indoors and making them unable to work – all factors that can put families under extreme stress and increase rates of violence. The researchers found that while there was an increase in heat-related violence across all income groups, the largest increases occurred among low-income and rural families.

The study from Fudan University in Shanghai adds to a growing body of research showing how rising temperatures could fuel a more violent world, especially for women.
