Apple reaches 100 million songs mark and leads the streaming market

A Apple Music announced on Monday (3) that it had reached the milestone of 100 million songs on its streaming service. According to the company, this number consolidates it as the largest music catalog in the world, surpassing the 80 million songs on YouTube Music, the 82 million tracks and podcasts on Spotify and the 90 million songs on Amazon Music.

“It’s phenomenal growth by any metric,” said Rachel Newman, global head of content at Apple Music, in a note released by the company.

“More music than you can hear in a lifetime, or several lifetimes. More music than any other platform. Simply the greatest collection of music, in any format, ever.”

Newman says that number will continue to grow exponentially and represents a major shift in the business of making and distributing music over the past two decades. In the 1960s, only 5 new albums were released each year. “Every day, more than 20 thousand singers and songwriters deliver new songs to the Apple Music”, he says.
