The action filed in the Supreme Court states that the Meta did not respond adequately to hateful content on its platform, especially in relation to the war in the Ethiopian Tigray region that began two years ago.

One of the plaintiffs said his father, an Ethiopian academic, was the target of racist messages before his murder in November 2021. According to him, Facebook did not remove these posts despite complaints.
“If Facebook had stopped the spread of hate and properly moderated posts, my father would be alive,” said Abraham Meareg, an academic like his father.
“I'm going to take Facebook to court so that no one ever suffers what my family suffered again. I seek justice for millions of fellow Africans harmed by Facebook profiteering and an apology for my father’s murder,” adds Meareg.

The plaintiffs ask the court that a compensation fund equivalent to $1,6 billion be created for victims of violence and hate expressed on Facebook.
