UK may fine TikTok for not protecting minors' data

TikTok, from the Chinese technology company ByteDance, could pay a fine of US$29 million for violating current UK data protection law, according to a note this Monday (26) from the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), the national authority in the subject. The allegations are that the Chinese social network "could have processed the data of children under 13 without adequate parental consent."

The platform, which is very popular among young people, would not have provided “adequate information to its users in a concise, transparent and easily understandable way”, according to the British agency.

In view of this, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), which controls digital issues in the United Kingdom, sent the information manager TikTok a notice of intention to fine.

“We all want children to be able to learn and experience the digital world, but with appropriate data privacy protections,” said Information Commissioner John Edwards.

“Companies that provide digital services have a legal obligation to establish this protection, but our provisional view is that TikTok has not complied with this requirement.”

TikTok expressed itself saying that it disagrees with the ICO. “While we respect the ICO’s role in protecting privacy in the UK, we disagree with the preliminary views expressed and intend to respond formally in due course.”
