♻️ Havaianas reCICLO has a new expansion cycle

Started in December 2020, with a project pilotor in a few brand stores, the Havaianas reCICLO was created with the aim of raising awareness among consumers about the proper disposal of sandals in addition to promoting recycling, in partnership with TrashInstartup specialized in innovative solutions for waste management.

Now, with the program already consolidated and expanding, Havaianas is expanding reCICLO, ending 2022 with 126 collection points in Havaianas stores in 43 cities. Of the 20 states served in total, 7 were included in this stage: Rio Grande do Norte, Alagoas, Paraíba, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul and Amazonas.

Until September 2022, the Havaianas reCICLO has already benefited around 1209 families through recycling cooperatives and ensured the proper disposal and recycling of a volume equivalent to 74% of fans at the Maracanã stadium wearing Havaianas (more than 59 thousand pairs).

Instead of becoming trash, these sandals are transformed into other products such as carpets, solid tires used in wheelbarrows and furniture covered in rubber blankets, such as the benches and shelves present in Havaianas stores.

Furthermore, the entire logistical route of the program was structured to be zero carbon, with the use of bicycles for collection in some stores and the offsetting of carbon emitted by other modes – such as cars and trucks – through the planting and preservation of trees in Amazon.

🌳 Deforestation accumulated in 2022 is the second worst in 15 years, points out Imazon

Data from the Deforestation Alert System (SAD) of the Amazon Institute of Man and Environment (Imazon) indicate that the Amazon Forest lost 10 thousand km² of forest between January and October 2022, the equivalent of six times the city of São Paulo.

It is the second worst mark ever recorded by Imazon in 15 years, just 0,5% lower than the accumulated figure in the same period in 2021, when the historic record was broken. Monitoring has been carried out by the environmental entity since 2008, using satellite images.

The state champion of destruction was Pará, which deforested 351 km² in October, just over half of that recorded in the entire biome. Imazon warns that deforestation has invaded protected areas in the state, where seven of the 10 conservation units and four of the 10 indigenous lands most deforested in October are located.

🌱 Sustainability and digital technology

Industry, education, health, finance, among others, have increased the demand for agility and optimization – and are increasingly exploring the resources offered by data centers. But this increase in the use of data centers comes at a high cost to the environment.

One of the research Schneider Electric, and market research consultancy Canalys (🇬🇧), shows that IT channel partners are investing in sustainability strategies, but struggle to translate the investment into action and therefore do not have a clear answer on how to achieve this goal. Survey results showed that 61% of companies are dedicated to sustainability, but only a third have established ESG goals.

This study reveals that throughout the IT sector there is a gap in sustainability actions. Digital technology is estimated to be responsible for 1,4% to 5,9% of global emissions, just behind the airline sector at 2%. Furthermore, significant waste is generated in the construction of data centers and during their operation. Minimizing this in the supply chain and diverting waste from landfill through reuse and recycling is a key strategy for becoming more environmentally sustainable.

“As the data centers become a vital part of infrastructure, energy operators will need to consider new solutions to reduce carbon emissions and energy use from design and construction through project operation,” says Shaheen Meeran, vice president of Marketing and Management. of Schneider Electric offering categories.
