William, a very popular prince who is preparing to be king

With his father, Charles III, assuming the throne of the United Kingdom at an advanced age (73 years old), the king's son with Diana Spencer (Lady Di) is also preparing to, one day, be crowned king.

William acquired from a very young age the sense of duty that corresponds to a future king. Over the years, “Wills” won the hearts of the British, many of whom wanted him to be the one to directly succeed his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, in place of his father, who was less popular.

While awaiting his turn to ascend the throne, William dedicates himself to leading as normal a life as possible, looking after his three young children, whether at Kensington Palace in London or at his new residence in the royal estate of Windsor, and fulfilling its public obligations.

He was pilotas a health services helicopter for two years, a job he abandoned in 2017 to dedicate himself full time to his duties at the Royal Household. A role that became increasingly important as his grandmother aged and his brother Harry and uncle Andrew distanced themselves from the royal family.

07h

This Friday (9) King Charles III will make his first speech to the British, who were very shaken by the death of Elizabeth II, which ended a historic 70-year reign.

Elizabeth passed away on Thursday (8) at the age of 96 at the Scottish castle of Balmoral, after a year of increasing health problems.

Subjects headed to Buckingham Palace in London to pay tribute to the sovereign, while messages of condolences arrived from around the world.

Photographs of a smiling Elizabeth II at various stages of her life are on the front pages of British newspapers this Friday. “Pain is the price we pay for love,” says the Daily Telegraph.

“I loved her. She was the only authority worthy of the name left in the country,” lamented 48-year-old Paul White on the London Underground. “Charles III (…) will have difficulty reigning after her, but I will support him and his family.”

At 73, Charles is the oldest monarch to assume the throne of the United Kingdom. This Friday (9) he must leave Balmoral, the Scottish residence where his “beloved mother” died, and head to London.

“During this time of grief and change, my family and I will feel comforted and supported by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection that the Queen enjoyed,” he wrote in a statement.

Tributes came from all over the world. The Eiffel Tower turned off its lights in memory of the monarch, while the Empire State Building in New York was illuminated in purple and silver.

US President Joe Biden praised a “stateswoman of unparalleled dignity and constancy”. Russia's head of state, Vladimir Putin, said that Elizabeth II had “authority” in the world.

Charles' first pre-recorded speech is due to be shown on Friday night as part of 10 days of plans that have been fine-tuned over decades by the Royal Household and the British government.

The new king is expected to have his first audience with the prime minister, the conservative Liz Truss, appointed by Queen Elizabeth II on Tuesday in one of her last official acts.

“We offer (Charles) our loyalty and devotion, just as his mother gave so much to so many for so long,” Truss said on Thursday in a Downing Street speech.

As part of his agenda, Charles III is also expected to meet with officials responsible for preparing his mother's grand state funeral, which will be attended by monarchs, heads of state and heads of government from around the world.

This Friday 96 cannon volleys will be fired. Churches, chapels and cathedrals must ring their bells from noon and flags will be flown at half-mast to mark mourning.

Charles will be formally proclaimed king on Saturday by a council made up of political and religious authorities, senior officials from the City of London and ambassadors from the Commonwealth.

The queen came to the throne at just 25 years old and her 70-year reign recorded several records.

After Elizabeth's great popularity, the future of the British monarchy promebe more complicated with Charles III, less appreciated by public opinion.

The British prefer their eldest son,William,  40 years old, and his wife, Catherine, who along with their young children, George, Charlotte and Louis, are considered a more modern family.

New Zealand, one of the 14 countries in Commonwealth which had Elizabeth II as head of state, has already proclaimed Charles as the new king.

In the United Kingdom, official mourning will end with a final goodbye to the monarch at London's Westminster Abbey.

Charles' coronation ceremony will take place on a date yet to be determined. Elizabeth had to wait more than a year before the official event that made her queen.
